So, don’t neglect road safety. No matter you are a beginner or experienced boat owner, you may forget or miss some steps in tying down the boat on the trailer and cause damage.

Where are the Strongest Boat Trailer Tie Down Points?

There is some tie down straps on the market, ropes, cam buckle straps, and ratchet straps are used to tie down the boat trailer. We strongly recommend that the ratchet strap is the correct and strongest tie down strap to secure your boat on the trailer.

There are 3 points on the boat that can be used for tie down to the trailer: 2 at the stern on both sides and 1 at the front of the bow.

The stern has very solid reinforcement compared to any other point, tie down the stern at both ends will make the hull of the boat have more contact with the trailer.

At the front point, tie down the bow of the boat to the front of the trailer is the best securement point to keep the boat stay solid and balance.

How to Choose the Right Boat Trailer Straps?

As we stated above, we don’t recommend the rope, cam straps as the boat trailer strap. We only recommend ratchet strap for boat trailer securement.

Tinnies tie down straps

For securing the tinnies on your trailer, you only need 1 inch light weight webbing strap, because of the size and weight. Normally the tie down straps for boats come with coated S hooks. In recent years, some customers have also chosen to use 1.5 inch stainless steel ratchet straps to tie down both ends of the boat rear.

Middle Sized Boat Tie Down Straps

Tie down the bigger boat, you need to use a wider webbing strap. So, instead of 1 inch or 1.5 inch strap, the 2 inch (50mm) ratchet strap is suited for tying down the middle-sized boat. You can choose the S hook or swivel J hook as the end fitting of the strap.

Knowing how to use the ratchet straps will be helpful for you to tie down the boat.

How to Tow the Boat Safely?

  1. Understand the towing regulations in your country or territory. No matter you are in the United States or Australia, each country has its own regulation about the boat and trailer, read and understand them before using them.
  2. Stop towing car and check if the boat is safely secured on long trips. If you are far away from the beach you want to go, you need to tow the boat on the trailer on a long trip, then we suggest you stop the towing car and come down to check if the boat is properly secured on the trailer, if the trailer is still safely connected to the car and tyres and other necessary matters need attention.
  3. Take care if the boat weight has been evenly distributed on the trailer. If you want to tow the boat and move smoothly on the road, proper tie down is necessary, but evenly distributing the weight of the boat on the trailer is also important. Different type of boat has different weight distribution, check the weight of the boat before towing and make sure the boat has been evenly distributed on both side of the trailer.
