How to Tie Down Your Jeep?
Generally, we can see new Jeeps being delivered to dealers, often secured on long-distance trailers or ferries, or the rescued Jeep was secured on the towing vehicle. When we transport the jeeps, we need to properly tie them down and make sure they can safely deliver to the destination in good condition.
What Do We Need to Prepare Before Tie Down Jeeps?
Before tying down your jeep, you need to prepare some tools to better securement.
Axle Straps
Used to securely attach the front and rear axles of the Jeep to the trailer.
D Rings
As an attachment point on the trailer for securing straps and axle straps.
Through The Wheel Tie Downs
Secure the Jeep tire through its hub and then attached to the anchor point.
Tire Bonnets
Used to secure the jeep tires and hold them in place, avoid the movement or sliding of tires during transportation.
Wheel Chocks
Using wheel chocks to prevent Jeep from moving.
Non-Slip Gloves
Using non-slip gloves can protect your hands, and increase operational safety and efficiency while operating the jeep tie down straps.
Step of Loading the Jeep to the Trailer
When you are going to load the Jeep onto the trailer, you should keep the Jeep aligned and centered to ensure stability during transportation.
- Make Sure the Trailer is Parked: First, you have to make sure the trailer is parked on flat and solid ground and the brakes are locked, this could avoid the trailer moving during Jeep loading.
- Check Ramp Position: Properly position the trailer ramp and make sure it is secured and aligned, so the Jeep can drive onto the trailer smoothly.
- Drive Slowly: Drive the Jeep slowly up the slope, maintain a low speed, and ensure the Jeep goes up the ramp smoothly.
- Keep the Vehicle Centered: When driving the Jeep onto the trailer, you need to pay attention to the distance between the Jeep and the two edges of the trailer and make sure your vehicle is centered.
- Tire Groove Alignment: If the trailer has tire grooves, you can align the Jeep tire to the groove to ensure the trailer’s stability.
- Confirm Tire Position: After loading, you can go out of the Jeep, check the tire position, and if the Jeep is straight. If not, please make the adjustment accordingly.
- Use Wheel Chocks: After the Jeep is parked on the trailer, use the wheel chocks to secure its tires to improve stability.
Secure the Front of the Jeep
Now, you need to choose the necessary tools to secure your Jeep on the trailer, let take a look at how to fix the front part of the Jeep first.
Use Through The Wheel Tie Downs or Tire Bonnets
You can use different tire straps to tie down the Jeep tire. Let us see how to use the through the wheel tie downs and tire bonnets.
- Through the wheel tie downs: Place the Through-the-Wheel Tie-Downs through the rims of the Jeep’s front wheels. Make sure the strap fits tightly around the rim, but do not damage the rim.
- Tire Bonnets: Slip the Tire Bonnets over the front wheels of the Jeep and make sure the tire is completely covered, and the straps are evenly spaced around the tire.
Connect to the D Rings
Find the D ring anchor point, generally on either side of the front of the trailer. Hook one end of the through the wheel tie downs or tire bonnet straps to the D ring, and then check the tension of the strap.
Using Ratchet Straps
Choose the high-strength ratchet straps and secure one end of the trap to the front axle or chassis and another end should connect to the D ring on the trailer. Use the ratchet mechanism to tighten the strap and finally, you need to check its tensioning.
Secure the Rear of the Jeep
Secure the rear of the Jeep actually is the same as the step to secure the front of the Jeep, you also need to secure the tires and axles to the trailer and use the same tooling.
Final Checks
After making sure the Jeep is secure on the trailer, you need to carry out final checks and safety measures, this is very important.
Check Strap Tightness
- Check all tie downs: You should check the tightness of through the wheel tie downs, tire bonnet straps, and ratchet straps at the front and rear.
- Check tension: Make sure all the straps are tight.
- Adjust the tightness: If any straps are loose or over-tightened, you should adjust the tightness.
Check Trailer
- Trailer hitch: Check whether the trailer is securely connected to the towing vehicle, and make sure the hitch is fully locked.
- Safety chains: Check whether the trailer’s safety chains are properly attached, also the chains should be in good condition, with no wear and tear.
Check Tire Pressure
- Tire pressure: Check the trailer’s tire pressure, which should meet the manufacturer’s recommendation.
- Tire condition: Check the tire condition, including tread wear and sidewall cracks, and make sure the tires you are using are safe for transportation.
Lighting and Brake Systems
- Light system: Make sure all the light systems are working.
- Brake system: Check the trailer’s brake system, including the brake line and brake controller connections, and make sure they are all working.
